Description: The central portion of Redwood National and State Parks’ Coastal Trail runs along a spectacular unroaded section of California’s north coast. This field-based class follows the Coastal Trail; observing the state’s fourth largest seabird colony, watching foraging seabirds and migrating gray whales, and visiting a rookery for the threatened Steller’s sea lion and the mouth of the Klamath River, where three other species of pinniped often feed. Siskiyou Field Institute: Shorebirds of the Klamath Coast, 4/28/12


Date: April 28th, 2012

Location: Crescent City, CA  Instructor: Gary Bloomfield

Tuition: $50  Naturalist Certificate, kids aged 12+

Description: This course begins with a field trip that visits Crescent City Harbor, moves along the rocky coast at low tide towards Point St. George, and finishes up at Lake Tolowa. We’ll seek out migrating and resident shorebirds: Black Oystercatcher, Black-bellied Plover, Wimbrel, Dunlin, Greater Yellowlegs, Black Turnstone, Surfbird, and more. After the field portion of the class, there will be a multimedia presentation focusing on the identification and biology of the shorebirds of the Klamath coast.

Siskiyou Field Institute: Introduction to Lichens, 4/14 & 4/15/12

Location: Deer Creek Center, Selma, OR

Beginner/Intermediate level class, Naturalist Certificate
Description: Discover the wonderful and complex world of lichens! We’ll collect lichens from the meadows and forests around Deer Creek Center and then return to the classroom to identify and preserve specimens; examining their structures and learning terminology needed to discuss the basics of lichen identification. Students will learn to key lichens using Macrolichens of the Pacific Northwest. You’ll complete this class with a small personal lichen reference collection to further your lichen studies.

Klamath Bird Observatory teaches Birding Basics, 5/2/12

Where: North Mountain Park Nature Center

Ever wanted to get involved with bird watching, but don’t know where to start? In this fun evening class we will review the basics of birding: where to go, when to go, and what to look for. We will discuss the basics of bird anatomy, bird ID and bird behavior, and will view photos of Ashland’s most common birds.

We will practice our ID skills with an interactive Power point presentation. Finally, we will provide an overview and recommendations for birding “equipment:” field guides, binoculars, and scopes. $10.

Description: Edible wild plants fascinate everyone, from the adventurer interested in learning wilderness survival strategies to the cook who wants to learn to prepare a meal from something new and different. In this class, you’ll learn how to identify common local plants, learn responsible wildcrafting procedures – most important of all – how to avoid poisonous plants. The class will finish with a feast that includes the fruits of our harvest in the field.

Siskiyou Field Institute: Introduction to Bryophytes, 3/24 & 3/25/12


Bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts) are tiny but important components of Pacific Northwest ecosystems. The Klamath/Siskiyou bioregion supports an amazing diversity of these fascinating non-vascular plants. In this class, students will learn about the basic biology and ecology of bryophytes, and will also learn to identify common species in the field. Class time will be divided between lectures, lab, and field trips.

We’ve scheduled these guitar workshops at different times so you have the option of learning blues guitar techniques from both David Jacobs-Srain or Ben Rice, or just from one. They both play a unique slide guitar as well as finger style and rhythm. Ben also plays the electric guitar.
