The ancient songs of the church have captivated and inspired composers since the very beginnings of western music, and this concert will explore a variety of modern takes on these beautiful ancient melodies.
Featured will by Four Motets by Maurice Duruflé, with Gregorian melodies set in a rich, French texture; plus a selection from the first set of the Strathclyde Motets by James MacMillan that combine a deep spirituality with a rhapsodic, improvisatory-sounding vocal style by one of the finest composers writing today.
The singers will be joined by SOU Chamber Choir in Spem in alium by Thomas Tallis, a colossal 40-voice motet by the Renaissance master, and the Berliner Mass by Arvo Pärt, a lovely, lyric, and spiritual work. Also included will be Ubi Caritas by Paul Mealor, a chant-based setting performed at the latest royal wedding.
