The Southern Oregon Repertory Singers begin their 26th year with a concert dedicated to early music: small concerted works by Baroque and Renaissance masters. Featured will be pieces by Monteverdi and Johann Sebastian Bach as well as the Mass for Four Voices of William Byrd. Joining the choir will be an intimate Baroque ensemble including Joanna Blendulf, cellist, and traverso player Sherril Kannasto Wood.
We will hear excerpts from Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo, also from his Vespers, one of the most important sacred compositions of the Baroque and from his Madrigals – Book VIII. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Aus der tiefe is a beautiful piece – a particular favorite of SORS conductor, Dr. Paul French.
William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices is considered one of the crowning achievements of the entire Renaissance. The dona nobis, in which Byrd (a practicing Catholic in a Protestant era) pours forth a heart-rending cry for peace, is especially moving.
Join us in celebrating the beginning of our second quarter century of vibrant, life-giving, artistic choral music.
